- Pearl Lang speaks with Don McDonagh about reviving her work Moonways and dark tides; the upcoming performances of her work at the Entremedia Theatre [the former Yiddish Arts Theatre] ; her work The possessed and its relationship to her prior work including Legend; her relationship with Connecticut College; dancing in and later teaching Martha Graham's work El penitente, including the difficulty of teaching and rehearsing this piece; dancing in and later helping to reconstruct Graham's work Clytemnestra; reasons for the ease of maintaining her own identity vis-s-vis Graham including her upbringing in the Middle West and fact that she is Jewish; compares the ecstatic quality of Graham's work with the ecstatic quality of Hassidic dance; other Jewish elements in Graham's work including the Sabbath Queen in Primitive mysteries; the Japanese influence on Moonways and dark tides, in particular the score [by Toru Takemitsu, Morton Subotnick, and Toshiro Mayuzumi]; working with her dancers, including her belief in the necessity of using one's imagination to inform movement; her regret that younger dancers all too frequently lack imagination; the chronic shortage of money to support dance, including the problems with matching grants [ends abruptly].
