Summary
Three dances from a performance presented at the American Museum of Natural History, followed by excerpts from a Javanese dance class, in practice clothes. These dances provide examples of the male and female styles of Javanese court dance. The male style is further subdivided into the "alus" or refined and "gagah" or strong styles. Golek manis portrays a young girl as she prepares herself inwardly and outwardly to greet the world. Perang putri is a combat dance for two warrior queens, Srikandi and Larasati, both wives of the Pandawa hero Arjuna. In the Panji-Bugis duet, which depicts a fight between the Javanese hero Panji and an emissary from the demon king Klana, Sal Murgiyanto dances in the strong style, while Endang Nrangwesti, playing the male character Panji, performs in the refined style. In Retna pamudya, a duet for the warrior queens Srikandi and Larasati, both dancers perform in the female style. The final segment appears to be a dance solo; Nrangwesti leads Deena Burton (in white) and another woman through the movements, which the three perform in unison without interacting with one another.
