Summary
Sanghyang Dedari is a ritual trance dance performed by two preadolescent girls. It is followed on this recording by Sanghyang Jaran, in which a male dancer enters trance, imitates the behavior of a horse, and walks on the embers of a bonfire made with coconut husks. The footage of the cremation rituals, recorded during the day, portray the elaborately decorated funeral pyres, and the singing of participants in the ritual. This segment also includes views of Candi Tebing Krobokan, a ruined temple. The third segment, recorded in the evening at a Balinese temple festival, captures a dance drama depicting the conflict between the Barong, a benevolent mythical creature, and the evil witch Rangda.
