Summary
The dance academy at Pujokusuman, an aristocratic house in Yogyakarta, regularly presents performances of Javanese court dances for tourists. Performers include the most accomplished students of Rama Sasminta Mardawa, with whom Deena Burton studied in 1989-1990. The first piece is a combat dance performed by two women, possibly portraying warrior queens. Wayang wong or dance drama is represented by the second piece, The death of Subali. The story depicts the contention of the monkey kings Sugriwa and Subali over the heavenly nymph Tara. The white monkey Senggana or Hanuman enlists the aid of Rama and Lesmana, the heroes of the Indian epic the Ramayana, and they assist Sugriwa in defeating Subali.
