- Summary
- Travel footage recorded during Deena Burton's stay in Indonesia under a Fulbright Scholarship. Disc 1 begins in Malaysia with a brief glimpse of the Batu Caves, followed by views of resorts and a nature preserve in the Cameron Highlands, with many closeups of trees and plants. The city of Penang is seen in the distance. A boat trip across the sea passes the port of Belawan before reaching the city of Medan in Sumatra. The first 36 min. of Disc 2 contain an informal musical performance by Batak musicians, possibly at the University of Northern Sumatra. They demonstrate various instruments and discuss their music with Burton and Skip La Plante. As the trip continues to the Sumatran highland town of Brastagi, the recording includes views of the Sibayak volcano, called Gunung Sibayh on a signpost, and examples of elaborately decorated Batak houses. The recording ends in Java, with views from a train on a journey from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. This recording has no dance content.

- Deena Burton, 1948-2005, was an American dancer, choreographer, and scholar of Indonesian dance. During her first trip to Indonesia in 1976-1980, she studied a variety of Indonesian dance styles. After returning to New York City, she obtained a master's degree in arts administration from Columbia University in 1982. Working with several dance, music, and theater groups, she staged both original and Indonesian choreographies, and founded her own company, Bali-Java Dance Theater. She was a major force behind the not-for-profit organization Arts Indonesia.
