Summary
Beginning with a creation myth once recounted by now-extinct native peoples of California, this documentary records the activities of a six-week archaeological dig conducted at the former site of a Maidu Indian village in northern California's Sacramento Valley. "4" refers to the state of California; "Butte" indicates the county and "1" that this is the first site recorded in the county. Adapting an interdisciplinary approach which draws on ecological, historical, geographical and ethnograpic data, the participants hope to discover relationships between man's products and behavior over time. In this field laboratory, students clear and measure the area to be studied and dig for artifacts which are then tagged and logged. Their diary entries are combined with archival photographs and firsthand accounts of a pivotal point in Maidu history, the intensive gold mining activities of prospectors in the 19th century. A newspaper article reveals that the Maidu were forcibly relocated to another reservation but not before they burned their homes. At the excavation, the students uncover the charred, blackened houseposts.
