- Summary
- Allie Gertz, a well-educated young woman from an affluent family, was diagnosed with AIDS six years after sleeping with a bisexual bartender who later died of the disease. In a candid interview with correspondent Lynn Scherr, Allie, who had hopes of becoming an artist, describes her initial reaction to her doctor's diagnosis and the ways she copes with the debilitating syndrome. She and her parents are committed to spreading information regarding AIDS transmission and prevention to young people. Allie's story is accompanied by a discussion concerning the increasing incidence of AIDS among college students. Dr. Richard Keeling of the American College Health Association's AIDS Task Force points to the role of alcohol as well as the alarming occurrence of sexual asssault in AIDS transmission. He encourages the formation of peer counseling programs like the one instituted by students at the University of California, at Berkeley to inform co-eds about AIDS.
