Summary
The hero of this film is a donkey who, after a happy life with Marie, is sold into harsh bondage to a succession of masters. In this allegorical tale, Balthazar is a witness-judge. He sees all and alone carries the burden of universal guilt. Balthazar's various owners represent the spectrum of vice: greed, drunkenness, lust. For those transgressions, Balthazar suffers and finally dies. (Does not circulate)
