Summary
After graduation, Anne dutifully remains behind at Green Gables with Marilla. An independent and ambitious 18-year-old, she dreams of becoming a celebrated author but relegates her aspirations to the background as she leads a simple life in Avonlea. Gilbert Blythe proposes marriage, but Anne considers him a friend, not an ideal partner. Offered a teaching position at a prestigious girls' school, Anne leaves her beloved Green Gables. When she arrives in Kingsport, she discovers that the town's establishment is against her. Over the course of the school year, however, Anne's wit and warmth win the respect of the entire town. When she returns to Green Gables for the summer, she learns that Gilbert has been ill with scarlet fever and is forced to re-evaluate her true feelings for him.
