- Summary
- This animal adventure tale combines fantasy and realism to chart the odyssey of a mischievous golden-haired kitten named Milo and his best friend, a snub-nosed puppy named Otis through hundreds of miles of wilderness on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. One day, Milos hops into a wooden box by the side of a stream and is pulled into the current. Otis runs along the bank hoping to rescue his friend but to no avail. Beached many miles from his home on the farm, Milo must survive on his own in an alien landscape, menaced by bears, befriended by deer and pigs, and competing for food with foxes and raccoons. Otis, who has lost the scent of his friend, finds himself marooned on a rock in the ocean but is aided by a haughty sea turtle who gives him a ride back to shore. Milo and Otis are finally reunited. They take mates, find shelter for the winter and raise families that eventually join together to make the trek home. (Circulates)
