Summary
A documentary which traces the transformation of the Brooklyn Bridge from a daring architectural and engineering feat to a symbol of American culture and strength. Part one deals with the herculean task of designing and building the structure begun in 1869 under the direction of John A. Roebling and continued after his death by his son Washington Roebling. Part two combines modern cinematography, old movie footage and time-lapse photography to reveal the bridge's aesthetic legacy and its place in American popular culture. Includes comments by Paul Roebling (great-grandson of the builder of the bridge), David McCullough, Lewis Mumford, and Paul Goldberger.
