- Summary
- Although many young people have dreams of winning fame and fortune "behind the mic," they seldom realize the hard work and commitment it requires to "make it." In this two-part tape, members of the EVC team venture behind-the-scenes to investigate the comedy and rap-music businesses. They interview young comics, Danny McWilliams, Jaffe Cohen and Karen Jefferson who reveal their reasons for getting into comedy, the difficulties in working out a routine and the stress of auditions. The ten videomakers visit the Comic Strip club where comedians join a lottery system and wait to be chosen for an audition. Scott Blakeman, a comedy instructor at The New School, stresses the need to persevere and not be discouraged. Rappers Lord Finesse, Dana Dane, African Bambada, and Diamond D discuss the history of rap, the role of producers, the intricacies of contracts and the importance of demo tapes. The EVC group visits Jazzy Jay Studios in the Bronx and observes rap/break dancers The Next School performing in Union Square.
