Summary
Considered a key film of the new Brazilian cinema, this film is at once a portrait of the folkloric and religious aspects of the fishing villlages in Bahia and a denunciation of the exploitation of the fishermen. "Barravento" (the turning wind or tempest) is the name given by the fishermen to any violent change in nature, love, or social environment. The film is set in the village of Buraquinho, near the city of Salvador. The fishermen work with a net lent by an absentee capitalist who demands a large percentage of the catch in return. The drama, underscored by devotion to condamblé, centers on Firmino, a one-time inhabitant who returns from the city determined to bring progress to the villagers and his struggles with Aruan considered to be a "living saint."
