Summary
In this final installment, Eustace and his friend Jill Pole escape pursuing bullies at an oppressive boarding school through a door in the garden wall to the magical kingdom of Narnia. There, the lion Aslan charges the two with the task of recovering aged King Caspian's son Prince Rilian, kidnapped many years before. Completion of their mission will depend on their strict observance of four signs: 1) In Narnia, Eustace will find an old and dear friend 2) The two youths will journey north to the ruined city of the ancient giants 3) In that city, they will see writing on stone that they must obey 4) The lost prince will be known because he will invoke the name of Aslan. Eustace and Jill enlist the aid of the magic owl Glimfeather who carries them to the marshland where they meet Puddleglum, a dour Marsh-Wiggle who joins their guest. Following Aslan's guideposts, they travel through the perilous land of the giants to the castle of Harfang where they narrowly escape being the meal of the kingdom's gargantuan king and queen. A vital clue in boulders leads them to the Underworld and its warden who takes the threesome deep in the earth to the domain of Queen of the Deep Realm. Awaiting the regent's return, Eustace, Jill and Puddleglum meet the Black Knight who shows them the silver chair to which he is bound each night. When he calls Aslan's name however, the trio realizes that he is the lost Pince Rilian and free him. Rilian defeats the sinister queen and is reunited with his father, Caspian, before he dies. Aslan appears and transports Jill and Eustace back to his land where they meet a revived young Prince Caspian. The lion sends them to the real world where the three youths frighten the bullies. Caspian returns to Narnia on a cloud.
