- Summary
- On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded 74 seconds after liftoff. All seven astronauts on board perished. One of the seven was Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher selected to go into space. This program, produced before the launch, is a profile of Christa McAuliffe and shows why she was selected from over 10,000 applicants to be the first civilian in space. It examines her reasons for competing, her roots in small-town America, and her educational objectives. In addition, this documentary discusses those issues raised by the Challenger disaster: risk-taking, dreams, the cost of the future, the value of life and death.
