Summary
"The second part of Birnbaum's Damnation of Faust trilogy centers on the development of Margarete, the female character of the Faust legend. It portrays a woman in the absence of a man. The work weaves fragments of dialogue, visuals and sounds to evoke a construct of deception and abandonment. Birnbaum examines the duality of the inner self and the outer world. The heroine looks out from an upper-floor room at the activities transpiring on the street below. Inner and outer worlds are separated by a window, a structure favourable to reverie and memory. The portrait combines state-of-the-art video technology with elements inspired by 19th-century Japanese composition. "Diagonal rain wipes" and "transitional fan wipes" reinforce the narration.
