Summary
Irene Girard and her husband are wealthy Americans living in Rome. When her young son commits suicide, Irene, believing she is responsible for his death, seeks some meaning in the chaotic post-war world. A Communist friend advises her to go to the people. She wanders the streets trying to help those in need. Irene's husband considers her philanthropy eccentric but tolerates it until the woman helps a young criminal escape from the police. Deciding that she has deteriorated into mental illness, he has her confined to an institution. Due to the scandal surrounding the relationship of Bergman and Rosselini, this film was witheld from American audiences for several years.
