Description
3 videocassettes (300 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
This documentary trilogy chronicles one of the longest, most heated battles in American political history: the 18-month struggle in Congress over President Carter's 1977 National Energy Plan. From Capitol Hill to Crystal City, Texas, from press conferences to strategy meetings, the cameras follow the President, Secretary of Energy James Schlesinger, senators, congressmen, aides and lobbyists. This five-hour trilogy was a public television special. Part 1 (90 min.): Covers the frantic lobbying that surrounded the national gas bill, from the final sessions of the State Energy Committee through the first test vote on the Senate floor. Part 2 (90 min.): Spans the historic eight-day filibuster and subsequent passage by the Senate of a bill diametrically opposed to the President's. Part 3 (120 min.): Depicts the efforts of the President, Secretary Schlesinger and Congressional allies to wrest a natural gas compromise from the Senate-House Conference Committee, to steer it through a coalition of Left and Right and finally into law.
