Summary
This documentary provides an historical overview of woman's struggle for equality. Beginning with a commentary on the inferior position of women in the early 1800's, this chronicle proceeds with a description of the fight for education, the plight of female factory workers, and the subsequent attempts at labor organizing. It traces the relationship of the first feminists with the Abolitionists and delineates the contributions of Black women, both slave and free-born. Detailing the battles of the Suffragettes, the film also examines "the feminine mystique" of the 1950's and charts the participation of women in the civil rights movement, Vietnam anti-war demonstrations, and women's liberation. Old engravings, photographs, newsreels and archival footage further illustrate the varied social, economic and cultural experiences of women through history.
