Summary
This film essay examines two major twentieth-century women artists, Frida Kahlo (1909-1954) and Tina Modotti (1896-1942), who lived during the period of the "Mexican Renaissance." Frida Kahlo, a painter married to the muralist Diego Rivera, developed an original style that drew on popular Mexican forms and her own inner world of intense emotional and physical torment. Tina Modotti was a photographer who came to Mexico as the companion and model of Edward Weston. Influenced by Weston, Modotti developed a purist and formal style of photography which she imbued with political consciousness. The film analyzes the women's contrasting reactions to post-revolutionary Mexico and includes recently-uncovered home-movie footage of Frida Kahlo with Diego Rivera and an example of Tina Modotti's performance as a Hollywood starlet.
