Summary
In the summer of 1955, Miyeko, a young Japanese survivor of the Hiroshima atom bomb, comes to stay with an American family in Connecticut while she waits to be admitted to a hospital to undergo surgery to repair some of the scarring from the bomb's radiation. She encounters hostility from the family's eldest son Johnny. He and his friends enjoy playing war games, especially "Japs" versus the Marines, and Miyeko's arrival elicits racist behavior on their part. In order to eradicate the barriers between them, Miyeko tells Johnny about the terrible day when the bomb fell, injuring her and killing her parents. Throughout her ordeal, Miyeko's grandmother gave her support, encouragement and the strength to withstand the hurtful taunts of others. At the conclusion, Miyeko leaves to have her operation and eventually returns to Japan. Johnny comes to realize the horror of war and its toll on innocent victims like Miyeko. Hiroshima maiden is an original story based on a historical event. Twenty-five young Japanese survivors of the bomb were invited to the U.S. to receive reconstructive surgery shortly after World War II, a time when inimical feelings between the American and Japanese people still ran deep.
