Summary
The story of a young Black child named Michael, his hundred-year-old great great Aunt Dew, his mother and the "big ugly old box." The box contains a small sack with one hundred pennies, each a memory of a year in Aunt Dew's life. When Michael's mother, burdened by the care of an elderly woman, wants to dispose of the box, Michael is fiercely defiant.
