Summary
Beginning with the 1966 defection of ten Cuban ballet dancers in Paris, this documentary is an indictment of Castro's Cuba centering on its systemic persecution of writers, intellectuals, dissidents, and homosexuals.Testimony by exiled government officials and authors reveal the moral purges carried out in the name of the Cuban revolution, the establishment of surveillance committees to control the populace, and the institution of prisons and labor camps to mete out punishment to those accused of "improper conduct." Among those who relate their experiences of the Castro regime are poets Heberto Padilla and Armando Valladares, novelists Guillermo Cabrera Infante and Reinaldo Arenas, writer/journalists Carlos Franqui and Susan Sontag and playwright Rene Ariza.
