Summary
This animated environmental parable, inspired by images and stories of the North Pacific Coast's indigenous peoples, is the story of what occurs when man and nature fall out of harmony with each other. The antics of the trickster ravens were a constant nuisance to the people but were tolerated because humans first came from the animal kingdom. One day, a boy shot an arrow that killed one of the ravens. In revenge, the ebony birds clustered together to block out the sun. The medicine man scolded the people saying, "You must only kill animals when you are hungry. Raven is punishing us for our carelessness. The only one who can save us is lord of the sky." A young boy volunteers to petition lord of the sky for aid. Climbing the steep and treacherous cliff to the lord's abode, the child stops to rescue an eaglet and return it to its nest. He encounters the formidable eagle, "lord of the sky" who rewards the boy for his bravery and kindness. The eagle emits a potent beam of light that disperses the eagles; he also returns the boy to his village. A totem pole was carved to honor the lord of the sky and the heroic boy who helped restore the sunlight. This tale of courage and spirituality was executed using 3-D models, puppets, special effects and cut-out paper animation.
