Summary
An exploration of the voodoo religion as practiced by devotees in New York City. Adherents of this religion, which combines African beliefs as well as Catholic doctrine, dispel common misconceptions and "Hollywood" fabrications. The complex rituals which invoke the aid of family spirits as well as spirit possession are demonstrated. The mythology and symbolism associated with the voodoo pantheon of gods are explained and illustrated. Followers discuss the impact of the religion on their lives and how it has helped them maintain cultural ties in an urban environment. Although predominant among Haitian immigrants, voodoo is a belief system held by other Caribbean groups and is fast becoming a major religion of the metropolitan area.
