- Description
- 1 videocassette (15 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Moko jumbie means "dancing spirit" and these ten-foot-high stilt walkers perform at street festivals in New York City, at Caribbean celebrations, and during religious ceremonies in West Africa. Wearing special costumes and masks which add to their mystery, the moko jumbie is both feared and revered. Because of their great height, they are seen as all-powerful and figure prominently in rituals related to ancestor worship, the new year and the harvest. This film, narrated by two moko jumbies who reside in New York City, shows the art, craft, dance and history of the moko jumbie. Filmed in Nigeria, the Virgin Islands and New York City.
