Summary
This documentary charts the 1964 Presidential campaign between Democratic candidate Lyndon B. Johnson and Republican contender Barry Goldwater following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Part 1 chronicles the factionalism within the Republican Party and the contention for power among the supporters of Nelson Rockefeller, Barry Goldwater, Henry Cabot Lodge, and late entry Senator Scranton. It covers the Republican Convention in San Francisco and the emergence of Barry Goldwater as the Republican candidate. Part 2 discusses the Johnson Administration's continuance of JFK's policies regarding civil rights, anti-poverty and housing programs, and tax reductions. It covers President Johnson's selection of Hubert Humphrey as his Vice-Presidential running mate, and the Democratic Convention in Atlantic City. The film follows the campaigns of Johnson and Goldwater, presenting the candidates' platforms and strategies. This political record concludes with the inauguation of President Johnson on January 20, 1965.
