Malcolm Jones, a high school basketball star, dreams of going one on one with Kareem Abdul-Jabar, but is letting his ego interfere with his academic studies. At home, his mother, a strict disciplinarian warns him to get his life back on track. In school, Malcolm's English teacher informs him that he will not graduate if his grades do not improve. His basketball coach chhastises him for not being a team player. In the middle of a big game, Malcolm collapses and is later diagnosed as having epilepsy. He is angry about having to take medication and resists the help of his best friend. It is not till he reads a poem written by his friend that he realizes how foolish he has been.
