Summary
Pulitzer Prize-winning author N. Scott Momaday narrates this documentary outlining the many contributions of Native Americans to life in the U.S. America's representative form of government was derived from that developed by the nations of the Iroquois confederacy. The architectural marvels of the ancient Anasazi and their Pueblo descendants predate by millenia our "modern" high-rise dwellings and skyscrapers. Skilled agronomists, Native Americans developed 48 percent of the crops presently grown in the United States. Intertribal trade was facilitated by sign language; written text was pioneered by the Cherokee Sequoyah. Native Americans utilized nature's raw materials for myriad uses and invented devices still employed today (e.g., the kayak, canoe, snow goggles, and snowshoes). Tribal medicine men, knowledgeable about healing drugs, are also talented practitioners of psychotherapeutics. In the area of fine arts, Native American weaving, jewelry and pottery are renowned worldwide. Citing these and other noteworthy achievements, Momaday points to the continuing impact of Native Americans on our lives.
