- Summary
- This documentary probes the mind of Mark David Chapman, who on December 8, 1980 shot former Beatle John Lennon. Using the testimony of friends, co-workers and police tapes of Chapman's confession, the film traces the murderer's adolescence and adulthood, his cycles of depression and his obsession with Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the rye who became his alter ego. This study of a mind breaking under stress raises disquieting questions regarding the power of the media, gun control, mental illness and the rights of public personalities.
