Summary
Capitalizing on the mystique surrounding the New York City cab driver, this unscripted "fun-u-mentary" features a collection of nine stories recounted by four drivers and one passenger. Their tales of the road, alternately and sometimes, simultaneously, surreal, romantic and zany, provide a unique window into the world of the cabbie. Opening with some useful advise from a veteran taxi driver, the film introduces a diverse group of driver/storytellers. In his cabbie career, Tim, a "Rodney Dangerfield type," has been enlisted as matchmaker to strangers sharing his cab, and as an intermediary in the reconciliation of an estranged couple who later married and invited him to the wedding. Jerry, an ex-junkie who drove around the metropolis stoned on grass, heroin, and speed, reveals a bizarre proposition he received while driving. Victoria, a cab driver who believes that God is her co-pilot, stopped her vehicle, despite the protests of her passenger, to rescue an elderly man buried in a snowbank. John, an aspiring actor/commedian, who derives much of his material from the cab and uses it as a mobile stage, tells of an amusing and macabre encounter with Claus von Bülow. Renee, the sole passenger of the group, recalls a nightmarish trip in a gypsy cab complete with red velvet decor, a black toilet bowl containing a dead fish and a demonic driver with gleaming eyes. Each tale is punctuated by photographic images shot over a two-year period by a former cabbie.
