- Description
- 1 videocassette (105 min.) : sd., b&w.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Wiseman tracks the activities of scientists at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta as they perform a variety of experiments on gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees. Many of the investigations concern sexual behavior and stimuli; others measure cognitive skills, the effect of alcohol and drugs and other neural and physiological determinants on behavior. The film invites comparisons between man and apes and questions concerning the primatologists' justifications for their intrusive studies. Upon its release, audience reaction to the film was sharply divided between those who accused Wiseman of unfairly attacking the Yerkes researchers and those who applauded the film for its anti-vivisectionist stance.
