Description
1 videocassette (91 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
This modern-day fable by a member of China's "fifth generation" of filmmakers, interweaves romance and comedy with epic drama to depict the story of an intrepid young woman during a turbulent period in China's past. Narrated by the heroine's grandson, the film is divided into two distinct parts, each with its own style and historical perspective. The first part charts the arrival of the young bride, Nine, to a remote and arid region of China to marry the aged owner of a winery. With his mysterious but convenient murder, Nine successfully assumes the family business and is pursued by an awkward but ardent peasant. The film's second half chronicles enemy brutality and partisan resistance during the Japanese occupation of China.
