- Description
- 1 videocassette (50 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Presents the case of David Sohappy, a Yakima spiritual leader, who was sentenced to a five-year prison term for selling 317 salmon out of season. Claiming an ancestral right to fish along the Columbia, Sohappy has openly defied state and federal fishing laws and has become a symbol of resistance for the Indians of the Northwest. Explores the historic conflict over the resources of the Columbia River and the political controversy involving fishing rights and the right to religious freedom. Interviews with Sohappy's family and supporters (including Senator Daniel Inouye), as well as government officials, dramatize the predicament of a man caught between two cultures.
