- Summary
- Animation is used to present this portrait of Sacajawea, the renowned Shoshone woman who was provisioner, translator and guide to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Told through the voice of a childhood friend, the film chronicles Sacajawea's abduction at age 10 by the Hidatsa tribe with whom she lived until age 14 when she was sold into marriage to the French trapper Toussaint Charbonneau. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson charged Lewis and Clark with the task of charting the lands of the Louisiana Purchase and following the Missouri River. The expeditionary team hired Charbonneau as an interpreter and also welcomed Sacajawea and her baby Pomp. With her acute knowledge of survival techniques, Sacajawea helped the explorers overcome the hardships of harsh weather and dwindling food supplies. Obtaining horses from her people, she enabled the men to cross the Rocky Mountains. She shared with them the exhilaration of riding down the Columbia River and seeing the great Pacific Ocean for the first time in November 1805, after a 4000-mile trek over the plains and mountains of America. In 1806, the group began its voyage home. At this point, Sacajawea's fate becomes shrouded in mystery. Some historians state that Sacajawea succumbed to fever, others that she went to live with the chief of the Comanches.
