Summary
This first feature-length documentary on AIDS activism chronicles the various activities undertaken by persons with AIDS to empower themselves and to challenge governmental and corporate inaction. Cameras are present to record the 1987 GMHC Aidswalk and the protests that marked the opening of the Fifth and Sixth International Conferences on AIDS. Reacting to the turgid pace of research in the development of drugs for AIDS patients, PWA have become their own researchers, lobbyists and drug providers. Demonstrators are seen converging on FDA headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda and the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta to demand expanded research into new treatments for AIDS, a more equitable clinical trial system and a broader re-definition of the syndrome. At the New York Stock Exchange, protesters disrupt trading to voice outrage at the profiteering of pharmaceutical companies, particularly Burroughs-Wellcome, manufacturers of AZT, the most widely used AIDS treatment drug. The inadequate care provided for persons with AIDS is graphically underlined by a distraught activist who confronts the mayor outside New York's City Hall with the story of a friend who languished in an emergency room hallway for nine days only to die forty-eight hours after leaving the hospital.
