Summary
This introduction to the work and goals of The Living Theatre follows the nomadic movements of its founders, Julian Beck and Judith Malina, as they travel from Broadway to Brazil, from Pittsburgh to Paris. Beck and Malina discuss the wellsprings of their theatrical troupe in New York's abstract expressionist movement and in the dramatic credo of Antonin Artaud. For Beck and Malina, theatrical performance is inextricably meshed with political activism. Judith and Julian were imprisoned in New York for defying the shutdown of their theatre for tax evasion, and in Brazil on charges of subversion. Their reminiscences are complemented by readings from their texts, The Diaries of Judith Malina and The Life of the theatre by Julian Beck and by excerpts from their sizeable repertoire: Masse Mensch; The Connection; The Brig; Frankenstein; Paradise now; Mysteries and smaller pieces; Seven meditations; Six public acts; Dismantling of the money tower; Prometheus; The Yellow Methusaleh; The Madhouse play; Antigone.
