- 1 videocassette (120 min.) : sd. ,col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- 1) Jacob Needleman - Spirituality and the intellect. Jacob Needleman, author of The Heart of philosophy and The New religions, addresses the essential tension between our material and spiritual natures. Needleman points to Socrates as the ideal philosopher who brought people to an appreciation of deeper strata of awareness. 2) Arthur M. Young - Self and universe. Arthur M. Young, inventor of the Bell helicopter and founder of the Institute for the Study of Consciousness, addresses the issue of separateness in an interconnected universe. He suggests that the ancient deities act in our psyches as forces which unite the individual to the universe about us. 3) Huston Smith - The Primordial tradition. Huston Smith, philosopher and author of Forgotten truth and The Religions of man, examines why the notions of the human soul and spirit persist in a modern, materialist world. Smith delineates the common threads that run through all spiritual traditions. 4) Jane Rubin - Self and society. Jane Rubin, teacher of religious studies at the University of California, Berkeley, contrasts the religious approach of those who seek role models in Christ or Buddha with the attitudes of modern existentialists who view such an idealist mode as an escape from authenticity.
