Summary
This documentary concerning the Massachusetts Correctional Institution, Bridgewater for the criminally insane, was under a court-ordered injunction to be shown only to criminal justice and health professionals, educators and government officials until 1991 when general distribution was allowed. Taking its title from the inmate-guard musical revue which brackets the film, Wiseman's exposé uncovers the egregious conditions that exist at the institution where guards relentlessly taunt the inmates who are incarcerated naked in bare cells, subjected to force feedings and given indifferent psychiatric care. Central to the documentary and underlined by inmate discourses delivered in the prison yard are questions of rationality, authority and national mores.
