- Description
- 1 videocassette (58 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- This musical tape introduces viewers to renowned Nortẽna (northern Texas-Mexican border) musicians Lydia Mendoza, Flaco Jiménez, Narciso Martinez, Los Alegres de Teran, Rumel Fuentes, Los Pinguinos del Norte, Santiago Jiménez and Ramiro Cavazos. For these Mexican-American artists, music is an integral element of ethnic identity, family life and community solidarity. The camera visits a 50th wedding anniversary celebration, dance halls and informal backyard gatherings where the unique strains of Tex-Mex music commingle with domestic rituals and bounteous servings of food. Though many of the Nortẽna's ballads plaintively convey universal expressions of love, betrayal and lonely exile, others refer specifically to Chicano history and pride: the battles for equality, the arduous regimen of the migrant worker, the violent suppression of strikers and the heroism of César Chavez.
