- Summary
- Investigating New York City's ever-mounting trash problem, the EVC team visits Fresh Kills, Staten Island, site of the world's largest landfill where garbage is brought via barges. The site which opened in 1948 covers 3,000 acres and by the year 2000, will be 500 feet high. The young people also visit a Brooklyn recycling center and a Bronx buy-back center. It is noted that none of the major New York City papers use recycled paper; the federal government continues to permit the cutting of trees for new paper. The students suggest ways that we can recycle and slow the process of waste buildup: 1) use handkerchiefs instead of tissues and ceramic mugs instead of styrofoam cups 2) choose reuseable rather than disposable razors and sponges rather than paper towels and say no to brown bags in the grocery store. Recycled glass when mixed with asphalt creates a sparkling effect in paving roads. The garbage crisis is everyone's responsibility and we must all cooperate to reduce trash.
