- Summary
- This film reflects on the Cuban Revolution in middle age and Fidel Castro's efforts to revitalize revolutionary politics in a "rectification" campaign. In interview sessions and outdoor rallies, Castro proclaims his faith in Communism and the "new man" modeled after Che Guevara. Cuban society is analyzed in both philosophical terms and practical applications. Comparisons of life before and after the revolution are made by eyewitnesses: a 102-year-old woman reminisces about the War for Independence against Spain and the sinking of the battleship Maine in Havana Harbor; an engraver, once an opponent of the revolution, discusses improved health care and educational opportunities; a young black man complains about the lack of democracy; women talk about "machismo," divorce and their newly-found independence. Filmmaker Saul Landau accompanies Castro on a visit to a construction site, a lens factory, to the Institute of Genetic Engineering and to neighborhood health clinics.
