Summary
The year 1965 saw an escalation of hostilities in Vietnam, an intensification of the civil rights movement in the U.S. and Cold War rumblings in the divided city of Berlin. The first group of Americans wounded in guerrilla raids on the Vietnam front arrives back in the United States. Members of the famed 101st Airborne Division arrive at Camranh Bay to reinforce U.S. forces in South Vietnam, now numbering 79,000. "Operation Piranha," an amphibious assault by Marines to trap Vietcong on the Bantagan Peninsula, proves to be one of the fiercest hand-to-hand engagements of the war. On the home front, the 54-mile Freedom March from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery is led by Martin Luther King, Jr. The Civil Rights Movement takes a violent turn with rioting in Watts. For the first time since the red Blockade of West Berlin in 1948, access routes to the city are shut down by the Communists. A daring escape from East Berlin is recorded. The tape ends with the big blackout of 1965 which engulfs the Northeast in darkness.
