- Summary
- John Fitzgerald Kennedy is inaugurated into office as the 35th President of the U.S., the youngest man and the first Catholic ever to hold the office. Chief Justice Earl Warren swears in Kennedy; Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the House, administers the oath to Lyndon B. Johnson, the new Vice-President. At his news conference, President Kennedy announces the creation of the Peace Corps, a voluntary program to help the developing nations of the world. The space race continues with the Soviet announcement that Major Yuri Gagarin has made the first manned space flight. Three weeks after the Russians put a man in space, the U.S. attempts to launch a manned capsule. Hundreds of newsmen look on as 37-year-old Commander Alan B. Shepard blasts off from Cape Canaveral in a Mercury capsule. Remarkable pictures show him in the capsule as he takes control of the Freedom 7 for a 15-minute flight, becoming the first man to pilot a space craft. Tensions arising from the Cold War also make headlines. President Kennedy outlines the West's reply to Krushchev's threats to sign a peace treaty with East Germany. Despite a Red ban, thousands of East Berliners cross to the West to attend an Evangelical Church Convention. The flight to freedom from East to West Berlin proceeds under the eyes of an anxious world. The last great exodus of refugees from the East is processed in the Marianfelde Center as the Communist regime moves to close the border. In the pre-dawn hours, troops construct a barbed wire barrier between the sectors. Elsewhere in the news, the trial of Adolf Eichmann begins in Jerusalem. Rafael Trujillo, strong man of the Dominican Republic, is assassinated after a bloody 31-year dictatorship. Father and son hijackers enroute to Cuba on a Continental airplane are overpowered in El Paso. A hurricane whips the Gulf Coast and ravages Texas and Louisiana. Kennedy is hailed in South America as he pushes the Alliance for Progress, a plan for the economic development of Latin America. 1961 also saw the unveiling of the new electric typewriter.
