Crowds greet the rebel units of Castro's "26th of July Movement." A revolt in Panama is averted when a group of rebels, led by a Cuban adventurer, surrenders to a call for peace from the Organization of American States. At the opening of the United States Fair in Moscow, Vice-President Richard Nixon and Soviet chief Nikita Khrushchev engage in a final exchange following a free-wheeling debate that has made headlines. Prior to a meeting with Khrushchev, President Eisenhower arrives in Bonn and is greeted by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. Library scenes re-create Russia's triumph in hitting the moon with "Lunik," perhaps the most dramatic feat in space exploration since the first satellite. Eisenhower travels abroad to prepare for Summit meetings in the Big Four capitals, Paris, London, Moscow and Washington. In the world of TV entertainment, Charles Van Doren faces the Harris Committee which has been investigating rigged and fixed quiz shows.
