Israeli forces withdraw from positions on the Gulf of Aqaba and in Gaza. UN forces move in to quell Arab rioting. In Rome, the six-nation European Common Market Plan and atomic pool receive final ascent by member nations. Moscow launches the first space satellite causing the West to re-appraise Red missile progress. America's first launching attempt at Cape Canaveral ends in disaster as the giant Vanguard rocket barely lifts off the ground when it falls back to earth. America's first commercial jet airliner, the Boeing 707, makes its maiden flight in Washington, anticipating the plane's use on scheduled passenger flights. Other news items include the birth of Princess Caroline to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco and the celebration of Queen Elizabeth's 31st birthday.
