Summary
Captain Chuck Yeager mans the cockpit of the Air Force's XS-1 rocket plane which flies faster than the speed of sound. With the relinquishing of the British mandate, the state of Israel is born in the tense atmosphere of civil war between Jews and Arabs. The Republican and Democratic conventions are held. Less than two months after the Allies' four-power rule ends, the Russians divide Berlin into two armed camps. The United States, Britain and France hold fast in the western sector; Russia controls the eastern sector. On the first birthday of the United States Air Force, General Hoyt Vandenberg, citing the Berlin Airlift, stresses the importance of air power as a force for peace. France is plagued by labor unrest. President Truman is re-elected after sources report N.Y. Governor Thomas Dewey to be the favorite. In China, Suchow falls to the Communists. Secret documents on microfilm are found at the Maryland farm of Whittaker Chambers. The evidence is examined by Congressman Richard Nixon and Chief Investigator Stribling of the House Un-American Activities Committee. In sports, Citation wins the Triple Crown and Babe Ruth is honored at a Silver Anniversay celebration at Yankee Stadium. At the Academy Awards ceremony, Oscars go to Loretta Young and Ronald Colman.
