- Summary
- President Roosevelt addresses Congress to inform them that 1943 will see the tide turning in favor of the Allies. A convoy taking supplies to Allied troops in Africa is bombed by the Luftwaffe but repels the attack with anti-aircraft fire. The Nazis retreat in Tunisia. A Flying Fortress takes General MacArthur to an American air base in New Guinea. After six months of occupying the city, the German army suffers the worst defeat in its history as Russians expel Nazi troops from Stalingrad. In Quebec, leaders of the U.S. and Britain convene to map future assaults on Axis forces. With British forces holding the boot of Italy, Salerno is selected as the landing locale of Allied troops. The invasion of Salerno is the biggest battle of the Mediterranean campaign. It is finally won as General Mark Clark's Fifth Army thrusts toward Naples. Hamburg, a prime seaport and submarine base, is attacked day and night by the 8th Air Force and destroyed. Preparing for a massive offensive on Rome, weapons from the U.S. and Britain are unloaded at the port of Naples. The luxury liner, Queen Mary, is pressed into military service. At home, Red Cross volunteers pack boxes for war prisoners. In the American West, the Navajo people offer gifts to the Red Cross and proclaim 700 young men ready for service overseas. The tape concludes with Christmas gifts for the children of crew members of the U.S.S. North Carolina.
