Summary
Scouting for enemy activity, British bombers destroy many Nazi U-boats. Nazi aggression spreads to Scandinavia as Germany invades Denmark and seizes strategic seaports in Norway. The German "blitzkreig" strikes the neutral countries of Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg. Allied land, sea and air forces are rushed in from England and France to stem the Nazi assault. The rapidly-spreading war in Europe takes a menacing turn when Mussolini's troops join Hitler's. Germany launches an all-out offensive against France. Allied troops are driven back and thousands are saved by ships that transport them across the Channel to England. The Nazis march into Paris and take the Maginot Line. The Petain government asks for peace and Britain is left to fight on alone. In the U.S., millions of men betwen the ages of 21 and 36 sign up for peacetime military conscription.
