- Summary
- This volume opens with President Roosevelt's address to Congress expressing hope for the country's economic recovery. William C. Bullitt, U.S. envoy to Russia, accompanies the first Soviet Ambassador to the White House. Elsewhere in the nation, serious drought from the Dakotas to Texas destroys crops and causes death. Thousands of unemployed men are put to work on the Great Wheeler Dam at Muscle Shoals, Ala., part of the TVA flood control plan. On the crime front, John Dillinger, America's Public Enemy Number One, is killed by federal agents as he emerges from a Chicago theater. The Grand Jury indicts Bruno Hauptmann on a charge of murdering the baby kidnapped from Charles and Anne Lindbergh. "Baby Face" Nelson is killed in a gun battle with U.S. officers. In the international scene, 100,000 farmers assemble in Vienna to pledge aid to Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss. The Home Guard is called in to combat a Socialist uprising that has plunged the country into civil war. On the Italo-Austrian border, Mussolini moves troops to intervene if Dollfuss is defeated. With the death of Paul von Hindenburg, 86-year-old President of the German Reich, Adolph Hitler is expected to assume the office of President, but abolish it and make himself dictator. The year also saw the assassination of King Alexander of Yugoslavia, Japan's denouncement of the 1922 Naval Treaty and student revolts in Cuba. In sports, "Wild Bill" Cummings wins the Indy 500, the Cardinals win the World Series, and Babe Ruth plays his last game. 1934 also saw the birth of the Dionne quintuplets in Ontario.
